SOLIDOL / 02 / Material
Inside the grease
Oil does the lubricating. Structure keeps it nearby.
Think of grease as a reservoir rather than a solid cushion. Its base oil supplies the lubricating film. The thickener gives the material a structure that can hold oil close to the working surfaces. Additives, when present, influence particular properties rather than making every grease universally suitable.
The animated cutaway separates these roles on purpose. Amber represents the lubricant, silver the moving surfaces, and the fine network the thickener. This is a conceptual illustration, not a microscopic photograph or a prediction of film thickness.
A good question is therefore not simply “how thick is it?” Ask which oil, which thickener and which operating conditions the product was designed around. Two greases that feel similar between tools can serve very different assemblies.
