SOLIDOL / 09 / History

From the grease cup to the workshop shelf

An ordinary material with an industrial biography.

Solidol’s story belongs to the everyday infrastructure of machines: grease cups, service points, handwritten maintenance records and tins kept beside a workbench. The name survived because it became part of the language of maintenance, not because every application stayed the same.

As lubricant technology developed, other grease families offered different combinations of temperature capability, delivery behaviour and service life. That makes historical familiarity useful context, but a poor substitute for a current technical specification.

Our timeline is a sequence of ideas rather than a catalogue of unverified invention dates: oil retention, calcium-soap formulations, standardised product specifications and modern condition-led selection. It is the story of learning to choose deliberately.
